Botswana is stepping up its game in the gambling sector. The country's Gambling Authority has granted ten new bookmaker licenses, with six operators already live. This expansion comes with a tech-forward twist: a strong push for AI integration in oversight. In contrast, South Africa’s online gambling market remains largely in legal limbo, dominated by offshore sites and fragmented enforcement.

The introduction of AI tools in Botswana is a major shift. These systems are designed to catch signs of addiction, block underage users, and spot shady financial activity. The licensing wave has already created over 400 jobs in Botswana, with thousands more expected. Operators like BetXplosion are bound by strict rules, not just in operations, but in giving back. A portion of each licensee’s Gross Gambling Revenue is earmarked for youth programs, education, healthcare, and sports.

South African casinos do contribute locally, but the online sector — run mostly by offshore providers — doesn’t play by the same rules. If South Africa ever decides to regulate online gambling formally, tying licenses to community investment could be a win for both the industry and the public.
