One very lucky player from Gauteng kicked off 2023 with a massive multi-million rand win, after landing the Lotto jackpot on New Year’s Eve.
The 51-year-old Roodeport man played the December 31st Lotto (draw 2295), and was thrilled to discover soon afterward that he was the winner of a R32 million prize!
The man bought his lucky ticket using the Quick Pick method, meaning that he let the machine choose his numbers. The ticket was purchased at Pick ‘n Pay.
Speaking about the moment that he found out the winner, the man told Ithuba, operator of South Africa’s national lottery: “The retail outlet notified me that I had won a big amount and that I needed to go Ithuba’s offices to claim. I was also advised to bring proof of identity and banking details.”
While the winner has chosen to remain anonymous, enough is known about him to report that he has been working in the security sector for over three decades.
He said that winning such a large sum of money was particularly significant for him as he had grown up under very challenging circumstances.
“I have eight siblings and we were very poor while growing up. I attended evening classes while trying to further my education, and later relocated to Johannesburg to start serving in the security cluster,” he said.
Another thing we know is that luck seems to have followed him over his lifetime, albeit on a smaller scale than a R32 million lottery win!
Whenever he played the lottery in the past, he won anything between R600 and R700, although one time he managed to win R14,000.
“Excited” and “humbled” are words used to describe the winner’s feelings when trying to convey his emotions. He has promised to help anyone who ever lent him a hand during trying times in his life.
“I will assist my family and my mother-in-law, who supported me when my brother and mother passed away,” he vowed.
