The National Lottery Commission (NLC) finds itself in hot water as it fails to account for a payment of R4.5 million to a non-existent chess association. This revelation has raised serious questions about the commission's financial oversight and the integrity of its funding allocations.NLC's Questionable Payment to Phantom Chess Association
An investigation by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in February revealed that over R1.43 billion of the NLC’s funds may have been misappropriated between 2014 and 2020. The NLC records show a payment in March to the "Phelindaba Chess Association," an entity with no online presence or official registration with any sports or non-profit bodies. Hendrik du Toit, chairperson of Chess SA, confirmed that neither he nor his organisation had any knowledge of this association.
In addition to the dubious chess association payment, the NLC's records indicate double payments amounting to R9.2 million to Swimming SA in June 2023. Attempts to confirm these payments with Swimming SA have so far gone unanswered. These discrepancies point to broader issues within the NLC's financial practices and highlight the need for more stringent oversight and accountability.
