The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) recently hosted the inaugural Responsible Gambling Foundation Awards, recognising the industry's leaders and innovators in promoting responsible gambling. Held at the iconic Emperors Palace, this event celebrated two decades of SARGF's efforts to foster awareness, prevention, and treatment for problem gambling in South Africa. The awards night also marked the commencement of November Responsible Gambling Month (NRGM), a public campaign aiming to educate citizens on the potential dangers of gambling addiction.
Since its establishment, SARGF has been at the forefront of gambling awareness, supporting over 20,000 South Africans with access to treatment and counselling. With NRGM designated each November since 2016, the foundation has heightened its mission to inform the public and collaborate with industry stakeholders, regulators, and licensed operators to champion responsible gambling. This year’s NRGM also aligns with the "16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence," underscoring the social impact of problem gambling on families and communities, including links to financial strain and domestic issues.
Sibongile Simelane-Quntana, Executive Director of the SARGF, highlighted the foundation’s legacy, noting, “As we mark 20 years of committed work in responsible gambling, it’s essential to honour the contributions of those in the industry who actively prioritise the wellbeing of gamblers and their families. These awards spotlight their remarkable dedication to creating a caring and conscientious gambling environment.”
Hollywoodbets, one of South Africa's largest gambling operators, sponsored the awards as part of its ongoing commitment to responsible gambling. Zandile Dlamini, Hollywoodbets’ Legal & Compliance Manager, expressed pride in supporting the initiative, remarking on the operator’s expansion of responsible gambling services through the Hollywood Foundation. The foundation has increased its counsellor team from two to five members and plans to extend outreach to more than 80 schools in the next financial year, enhancing community engagement and awareness.
The SARGF Awards celebrated outstanding contributions across several categories in responsible gambling. Key highlights include Hollywoodbets winning Gold for operator commitment beyond licence requirements, Western Cape Gambling & Racing Board receiving top honours as a regulator, and Time Square (Sun International) recognised for best innovation in responsible gambling programmes. Other awards acknowledged excellence in operator training, marketing campaigns, and sector-specific achievements, with prominent operators like Tsogo Sun, Gold Rush, Betfred SA, and the Gauteng Gambling Board also receiving accolades.
The SARGF Awards not only highlight achievements but also underscore the importance of ongoing support for responsible gambling services, including free counselling and treatment. Through partnerships with key industry players, the SARGF continues to lead the charge towards a healthier, safer gambling environment in South Africa.
