South African Whistleblowers Recognized Internationally

In a recent international acknowledgment of bravery, Mzukisi Makatse, a former employee of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) in South Africa, has been honoured with a prestigious whistleblower award. Makatse's unwavering commitment to integrity came at a personal cost when he refused to approve a questionable Lottery grant for a profit-driven music festival. His resistance led to his suspension and eventual dismissal, triggering a chain of personal hardships including depression, financial strain, and familial tensions.

A Global Recognition for South African Integrity

Makatse is among five South African whistleblowers celebrated this year for their courage in exposing corruption and wrongdoing, despite facing severe personal risks. These awards, presented by Blueprint for Free Speech, a charity promoting freedom of expression, include a monetary prize of £2,000 (approximately R47,500) for each recipient. These accolades underscore the global significance of their actions, highlighting the ongoing battle against corruption and malfeasance in South Africa and beyond.

Other South African Heroes

The other South African honourees of the 2023 Blueprint for Free Speech award are:

• Mathapelo More, a former internal auditor at Daybreak Farms, who suffered grave consequences for exposing internal corruption.
• Johannah Phenya from Foursight IT Business Solutions, who, alongside her late husband Marumo Phenya, disclosed malpractices involving a Home Affairs official. Marumo Phenya was tragically assassinated in 2022.
• Dawood Khan and Wardah Latief, who revealed a significant money laundering scheme involving major South African banks and a gold smuggling gang.
