South African Lottery Creates 50 Multimillionaires in 2022!

It’s been a bumper year for South African lottery players! The National Lottery operator, Ithuba, wrapped up the year with the news that no less than 50 new multimillionaires were created this year. The lives of thousands more were improved thanks to king-sized jackpots which dropped at a rapid rate from January to December 2022.

According to Ithuba, the operator of the National Lottery in SA, the highest PowerBall jackpot won for 2022 was R167m on February 11, with the second highest PowerBall jackpot this year being R135m.

The largest jackpot won this year was on a PowerBall lottery game back in February 2022, when a single player raked in an eye-watering, heart-wobbling prize of R167 million. This prize was won by a businessman from Ballito in his late 60s who wagered just R150 on the Powerball tickets bought in advance of the fateful draw.

The man, like many other South African lottery winners, preferred not to disclose his identity but he did agree to talk to the press. Despite the massive win, he said that he would not be making any drastic life changes. He intends paying off his debts, making some investments but, more importantly, giving a lot to charity.

R135M Powerball Jackpot

But the second-largest prize wasn’t far behind the big winner, with a hefty R135 million jackpot paid out. This time, the winner from Johannesburg, had spent four decades working in South Africa’s construction industry and was thrilled with his massive windfall. He said that he wanted to spoil his family with a new house before anything else.

Street Vendor Wins R86 Million

Perhaps the most life-changing win this year came to a 42-year-old street vendor from the Western Cape who found himself R86 million richer.

He said that the first thing he did when he realized that he was a winner was thank the Lord.

“I play the Lottery games twice a month, and I mix my numbers each time I play, this time around I specifically played LOTTO and not the other games, as I went with my gut feeling,” he told Ithuba. “I have never won this much money before, the most I won from a game was R450. All my life I have always dreamt of winning a big jackpot, and now I can build a house for my family.”
